ANSI/AAMI ST108 – Water for the Processing of Medical Devices

February 8, 2024

Are you ready for AAMI ST108?
The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) has developed and published a new standard, ANSI/AAMI ST108:2023 – Water for the Processing of Medical Devices. This new standard replaces AAMI TIR34:2014.

ST108 has a strong emphasis on proper water system design, monitoring, testing and maintenance. Unlike TIR34, which offered guidelines around water quality used for medical device reprocessing, ST108 has binding requirements for sterile processing departments. Thus, it is important that you understand this new standard and the effects of water quality on medical device processing.

Quick Safety Issue 64 Feb 2022

January 1, 2023

QUICK SAFETY Issue 64 | February 2022

2022 The Joint Commission, Division of Healthcare Improvement

Ensuring critical instruments and devices are appropriate for reuse.

Surgical instruments and other critical devices – those that enter sterile tissues1 – are reprocessed and reused every day in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and other health care facilities. Because of the costs of physical space, supplies, equipment, and personnel to perform reprocessing and sterilization of reusable devices, some organizations choose to use disposable instruments and devices for critical procedures in some or all areas of their facility. For organizations performing reprocessing, ensuring that those instruments and devices are reusable – that they are in good condition, and can be cleaned and sterilized following validated manufacturer’s instructions – is critical to patient safety.
