This position is responsible for sterilizing and decontaminating surgical instruments and supplies for use in the operating room and throughout the hospital and clinics. The incumbent assembles surgical carts, tracks and maintains the total inventory of instruments, disposables, and implants. The employee is responsible for the monitoring of biological and chemical indicators to ensure quality and consistency for sterilization of instruments and medical supplies. This position coordinates the daily activities of the other employees by monitoring performance, scheduling work shifts, coordinating and conducting training and in-services, monitoring quality control, and safety processes. This position has technical expertise for cleaning, assembling, and processing specialized instruments and medical supplies and serves as an expert in this arena. This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Responsibilities:

Prepares and sterilizes surgical instruments and supplies according to established procedures and techniques.
Assembles special procedure trays, surgical instrument trays and case carts.
Delivers sterilized supplies to, and retrieves used supplies and trays from hospital department and clinic locations.
Inspects and ensures proper functioning of instruments and equipment.
Facilitates the replenishment of low, broken or missing items.
Documents patient charges for the use of supplies and procedure trays.
Restocks labels and maintains inventory; submits requisitions; collects, distributes instrument trays, carts and facility medical supplies.
Verifies that equipment functions properly, and verifies the repair or replacement of defective equipment.
Sorts sets of instruments, trays and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Coordinates the daily activities of the other employees by monitoring performance, coordinating and scheduling work shifts, conducting training and in-services, monitoring quality control and safety processes.
Participates in and supports continuous quality improvement activities.
Serves as a subject matter expert in sterilization methods, instrumentation, sterilization standards.
Troubleshoots the instrumentation needs of the OR and other departments as necessary.
Serves as an expert in sterile processing database programs.
May order supplies, as needed.

Qualifications Required:
Three (3) years of sterile processing experience.
One (1) of the following:
Certification as a Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS), Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER), or Certified Healthcare Leadership (CHL) from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).
Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER), Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS), or Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) from the Certification Board of Sterile Processing & Distribution (CBSPD).

Licenses Required: One of the following
Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) certification and maintenance of certification.
Current certification through the Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Job Description: Sterile Processing Endoscope Reprocessing Technician

Salary or Pay Range: Salary or Pay Range: $2,800.00- $4,996.80 Biweekly

The Sterile Processing Educator will develop and provide orientation, continuing education, competency and training, and staff development for the Sterile Processing Unit. This positions’ primary responsibility is for developing, implementing, tracking and managing all departmental educational activities that include training programs /curriculum and instruction for both newly hired and current staff members. This position will be responsible for writing, reviewing, and updating unit competencies and assisting management in updating and or developing department policy and procedures. Provides support to all staff to maintain Continuing Education Unit (CEU) opportunities offered to employees as well as assistance in certification / re-certification. Incumbent must be able to organize departmental in services and coordinate vendor in- services for continuous training.

• Minimum (1) year experience as a Trainer/Educator, including experience developing and implementing educational and training plans for various roles in the department.

Job Description: Sterile Processing Endoscope Reprocessing Technician

Salary or Pay Range: $37.77- $46.97 Hourly

The Endoscope Reprocessing Technician (ERT) is highly skilled and works with complex endoscopes used to perform complex, advanced patient procedures including GI/Pulmonary, endoscopic cases. Responsibilities are focused on the very detailed, precise technical aspects of cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, sterilizing and putting together the complex scopes in accordance with regulatory agency specifications. Endoscopes use advanced technology and are intricately designed. Endoscopes are used in complex GI/Pulmonary, endoscopy medical procedures for patients that may have acute, complex medical conditions. The position requires strong, critical attention to detail to perform accurate and thorough work as the consequences of inappropriate/insufficient endoscope reprocessing may have an adverse negative impact to safe patient care and outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications: For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position:
• One year demonstrated current (within the last two years) experience working with flexible scopes.
• At least five (5) years recent experience in a similar setting to a Sterile Processing Unit.
• CRCST from Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or CSPDT from The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
• Advanced Requirement: Must complete and hold an advanced certification from either Healthcare Sterile Processing Associated (HSPA) or The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), within 6 months of hire. Advanced Certification may be any of the following: -Certification in Endoscope Reprocessing (CER) from HSPA -Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) from CBSPD.
• Must maintain certification by completing CEU’s and renewing certifications as a condition of employment.
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/training.
• Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience adhering to American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) recommended practices.
• Knowledge of AORN (Association of Operating Room Nurses) Recommended practices on care of instruments scopes & powered surgical instruments, cleaning and processing of instruments, selection & use of packaging materials, surgical attire, traffic patterns in the surgical suites and operating room sanitation.
• Strong attention to detail, quality, and thoroughness to complete work in timely and accurate manner.
• Independent critical thinking skills and initiative to recognize, identify and solve problems recognizing potential impact to others, patients, internal and external customers.
• Experience using Sterile Processing Unit programs and computers including instrument tracking program, email, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
• Ability to apply policy and procedure when making decisions.
• Ability to identify, analyze and report problems accurately and timely.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment to recognize situations that need to be escalated and notify supervisor or other management of unusual or unexpected situations.
